$400 million – to build a portal that doesn’t work?

Today’s article in NYTimes: From the Start, Signs of Trouble at Health Portal Interviews and an examination of confidential documents point to a series of missteps — financial, technical and managerial — that led to the troubles with the new online insurance marketplace.

A Silicon Valley startup could have built a dream site for a fraction of $400million. I can’t imagine what other waste is happening. To create a federal bureaucracy on top of so many others just cannot work in a country this large. If this will happen it can only happen at the state level.

So many people point to countries that have socialized medicine that works but these countries are a fraction of the size of the USA (Canada’s population is smaller than California). I’m not evil or hateful, I hate to see people struggle. I get how tough it is to get healthcare for some. But this isn’t going to work if we keep trying to create something this massive. We will end up like the USSR or China – the pendulum will swing back and nobody will win but the central governments and the bureaucracies or big companies (insurance companies) behind them.
