Jim's Journal

Rome 2021

After a bit of a start stop in 2020 we had to change our trip from Jim’s DNA trip of Sicily and Greece to Rome and Greece for flexibility. I reached out to our BNB host from several years back when Stephanie and I were able to visit Rome, Florence and Venice – and he got us the same place. Luca and his apartments – he’s a really amazing guy. We have stayed in touch via email and social media – he’s moved to tech so that is in common but still has the apartment in Campo de Fiore downtown historic Rome but now the whole building. So Maia, Daniel and Sophia got the top floor and we got the middle. The balcony had a beautiful view and it was comfortable.

From the balcony

We also connected with Stephanie’s old friend Laura – who is a historian and tour guide in Rome. Both Laura and Luca took time off to have dinner with us and we also were able to book time with Laura to tour the city. It was nice to see the city through the kid’s eyes this time. We also made it to the colosseum and walked all around. And of course we ate and drank and walked and walked.

The best part were the in between times. Seeing the kids interacting and teaming up, learning and loving. Sometimes stressing out. At times we each took breaks and took our alone time. Mine mostly was a run early in the morning or a walk just a little behind with my camera. Dan shared his facts and points of view, was kind to his sisters and at times he and I had some heated but open discussions. Maia felt the heat and the history and the ethnicity. She and Sophia shared moments only sisters have and Sophia took the time to think, consider and make us laugh with here subtle way.
