After getting the chance to spend the weekend in New York City, I made a list of some things I learned and relearned while traversing across the city. Here are 20 takeaways from my weekend:

“The Vessel”
  1. Google maps is a God-send!
  2. The MTA is superior transportation and makes Atlanta’s MARTA look utterly ridiculous…
  3. It’s amazing how many languages you’ll hear over the course of a day.
  4. Going out to Brooklyn for pizza just makes sense.
  5. This city is busy!
  6. Any sort of food you could want, New York probably has.
  7. You will need chapstick in the winter.
  8. Speaking of the cold, headgear is required, not just suggested.
  9. Art is EVERYWHERE, in the buildings, near the buildings, on the buildings, and the buildings themselves too.
  10. If you don’t like to walk, this is not the place for you.
  11. I’m jealous of everyone’s beautiful, WARM coats!
  12. I just love cities.
  13. If you can, eat at as many local joints as you can.
  14. Stay vigilant!
  15. Don’t wait for the walk sign, if there’s no car coming, you can cross the street.
  16. 8:00pm is a normal time for dinner.
  17. Just keep moving – no matter what!
  18. If you say “sorry, no thanks” to a person trying to peddle something on the street they’ll look at you like you have 2 heads.
  19. Bored? There’s a museum for that.
  20. There’s something for everyone in NYC.
With Love, From Dumbo

New York City holds a special place in my heart. I have family from New York and family that still lives there. I have fond memories of visiting my great grandparents in their brownstone in Brooklyn, eating pizza and ice cream looking out onto the Brooklyn Bridge with my dad, hurrying through Manhattan to see a Broadway show, seeing a dress rehearsal and then the production of ABT’s Cinderella at the Lincoln Center, eating a real deli sandwich and a giant piece of cake at a deli, talking to a waiter about learning English from radio and tv, and walking through Central Park with my best friend.

Maybe, if circumstances were right, I could make New York City my home. But for now I’m just grateful for the visits here and there, the new memories and the old.

*Huge thank you to all my friends who made the time to see me while I visited and gave me a warm place to stay!!!
